Almost everyone remembers their first Barbie doll and playing dress up with anything we could find in our Mom’s closet. Â Years ago during my grandmother’s and even my mother’s generation I never saw Barbie dolls that looked like me but I would still try to dress up like my Mom or even a Hollywood movie star.Â

Fast forward to 2024. I am so pleased to see Barbie’s Fashionistas Line. It represents inclusivity and diversity. Â The growing line showcases a wider variety of dolls. Â It’s like a breath of fresh air to see diverse people like me who exist in the real world seen in this line of dolls. The most recent addition to this line is a blind Barbie doll and a Black Barbie doll with Down’s Syndrome.Â
It gives me a sense of pride to see they have designed dolls that look like me and dolls that look like some of my fellow friends with other disabilities too. It inspires us to discover the beautiful Barbie and handsome Ken inside us.Â
This line displays an increasing variety of disabilities plus a wide range of hairstyles, colors, and textures.Â
Furthermore, the line features a variety of skin tones and eye colors, body types, and of course a variety of fashions. For example, Barbie has featured dolls in wheelchairs like me living with mobility issues, and dolls wearing hearing aids to represent individuals in the deaf community living with hearing loss such as their Barbie Fashionistas Ken doll wearing hearing aids.
I do confess that I have added these inclusive and diverse Barbie dolls to my Diversity Dolls Scrapbook. Â Here are sample photos that I have now added to my scrapbook.

And of course, the doll that reminds me of me in a wheelchair and also in my scrapbook is this one.

I also confess that I love shopping for Barbie’s Fashionistas Line of dolls as a Doll Collector. Plus I enjoy shopping this line for my nieces and nephews at  Macy’s and Target who also happen to be sponsors of Runway Of Dreams.Â
Whenever I shop, I find that Macy’s and Target offer affordable prices and they often offer better prices and deals if you shop online. That’s my financial tip.

Honestly, when I see this growing  Barbie Fashionistas line, it inspires me to do a DIY Inclusive Fashion & Style Makeover. I will be looking to donate clothes that no longer fit me or my lifestyle and change things up to inclusive fashions that are exciting and new.Â
Let’s look inside our closets together.
When was your last DIY Inclusive Fashion & Style Makeover? Â Or if you are a Caregiver for friends and family with differently-abled needs, when last have you helped the person you are caring for do an Inclusive Fashion & Style makeover?
If you haven’t noticed the Hot trends for Adaptive clothing, all I can say is look again.Â
Thanks to clothing Brands like Tommy Hilfiger Adaptive, Zappos Adaptive, collaborations, and affiliations between companies and organizations like Victoria’s Secret and Runway of Dream, adaptive fashions, the adaptive clothing market has been on record as being a 300 billion market and continues to rise.
Deciding what to wear for Summer or any other Season of the year can be challenging especially if you are living as a differently-abled person with disabilities that impact various areas of your life like your daily mobility, functionality or physical, Â neurological, cognitive, sensory development, and more.Â

Caregivers of a family member with a disability that impacts intellectual, sensory, and social areas such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Â should also individualize the shopping experience to the needs of the neurodiverse individual with a disability as it relates to adaptive clothes, shoes, and more, for comfort, fit, textures, tagless clothing options, and sensory-friendly and adaptive user-friendly closures to reduce frustration while dressing. Â
Shopping for sustainable styles is always best for everyone regardless of your disability. Shop for Brands offering Sustainable Styles or similar partnerships like Tommy Hilfiger and ThredUp. Â Visit TommyTredUp.com below to see fashions and styles that look like you.

Beautiful dresses are always a nice option for the differently-abled ladies or girls but when you slip on jeans or trousers you may want to look for user-friendly adaptive closers or magnetic buttons.
For our differently-abled boys or men, we also want to keep user-friendly closures in mind for comfortable and stylish pants for them as well.Â
All differently-abled men and women should explore which adaptive closures or buttons work well for them on adaptive clothing items like bras, sweaters or blouses, sneakers, shoes, and more. Again, we need to discover the beauty of Barbie or the handsome Ken inside us.Â

Again, it’s best to explore various adaptive clothing for features like functionality, and ease of use and to look for specially designed closures such as velcro or magnetic buttons and closures. Here are some other features that I like to consider: ease of use, texture, and soft materials for friends and family with sensory issues.
It is also important for differently-abled individuals to feel comfortable and confident in their clothing so that they may even experience positive benefits like self-empowerment and individuality of self-expression from the fashion and styles that they choose to wear. Â

So whether you are a paraplegic or quadriplegic or living with any other disability, let’s all shine like a Lookability Star when you select your fashion and style and do your DIY Fashion & Style Make-over.Â
