How I Style Barbie & VS Pink Inspired Looks for my Size & Health

By Lookability Club Stylist

I love to be curious when it comes to new looks. So I get my inspiration to get myself all dolled up for the Summer from any and everywhere even Barbie’s latest fashion line of dolls will give me the  inspiration I need for cool Summer inclusive, adaptive styles or outfits.  I figured out how to style my Barbie Inspired looks with VS Pink latest styles and collections and I think this can be done for our loved ones as well no matter the size or health issue even if you have to get some outfits altered or customized.

Here’s how I get my inspiration.

In case you missed it,  Mattel has released it’s first ever Type-1 Diabetes Doll featuring a beautiful doll wearing a Continuous Glucose Monitor on her arm and she proudly displays her pink insulin pump on the side of her waist and the cutest polka dot top and skirt with ruffles. I thought this made me and other people with health conditions like these feel like we truly matter.

I not only enjoy capturing inclusive, adaptive styles for myself from Barbie inspired looks like these but I will create different looks for my family members like my sisters or cousins who live with similar health issues or other disabilities. I am talking about not only styling my blood related relatives but the friends I formed a sisterhood with at Summer camps as well as sorority sisters at college. It doesn’t matter what shape or size they are, once I feel inspired and get an idea to give them a make over they better get ready for it. I usually give them little notice and tell them like it or not, here we go. Let’s not be afraid to change things up.

After seeing the latest Type-1 Diabetes Barbie, although my adaptive style outfit may not be identical to this Barbie, I like the look and  so I shopped the clearance racks from high end stores to the latest sales promotions at more affordable stores like Kohls and even checked out any local consignment shop I could find in local urban or suburban neighborhoods. And of course nothing is wrong with stopping by the Good Will Store that helps so many people who cannot shop high end boutiques.

For example, I found a polka dot dress like this on a sale rack and thought that it captured a different look. It certainly was a different look for me which I thought had elements and nuances of  the look of the latest Barbie at least from my perspective but it was much more suitable for my cousin who loves to express her curvy style.

I must say that I love the fact that this latest Barbie uses a pink insulin pump along with pink medical tape to keep her Continuous Glucose Monitor  (CGM) in place. This is when I had the idea to pair this look with the first ever VS Pink Adaptive Style Backpack, the moment a friend sent me a photo of the backpack letting me know that it’s available on the Victoria’s Secret website and that it has the Gamut Certified Seal, I fell in love with it. Plus it features an exterior access port for cords and tubes, water bottle pockets featuring grab loops allowing easy access to easy pull open. There is also versatile attachment straps featuring easy-open clips allowing hanging on a range of mobility devices. Last but not least, there are handy grab handles on each side and also padded back pockets to comfortably tuck away any unused straps. It’s simply practical yet trendy for my personal belongings and self-care needs and even perfect for me to use on a weekend getaway.

I think that the Barbie and VS Pink inspired looks work for me and my friends and family. The look makes not only me but I think anyone living with medical conditions or disabilities feel so empowered, motivated and truly seen.

And even if you don’t have any medical condition or disability you can be inspired to create your own cool stylish looks and fashions statement just from being open to these powerful fashion statement from brands like VS Pink or Barbie.

I feel like anyone can create these trendy looks inspired by Barbie and VS Pink on a budget as long as you know what to pull off the sales racks.

The key is to create the look that truly inspires you. It doesn’t matter whether your look is inspired by the latest biggest Hollywood Star, a Grammy Winning Music Artist or EGOT, you can always still add little touches like a favorite Summer scarf around your neck and make the look your own.

And the fact that the latest Type 1 Diabetes  Barbie inspires my inclusive and adaptive fashion wardrobe says a lot. I am so glad I decided to pair this look with the first ever VS Adaptive Style backpack.  I can only imagine how many more children with medical conditions like this or other individuals living with Type-1 Diabetes or any other disabilities in life can get inspiration from this.
